Harry Potter
The burning question about location on every Harry Potter fan's list is "Where is Hogwarts?"  Well, in the films, there are actually several locations that make up the famous wizarding school in addition to the different locales around Great Britain that comprise the whole world of Harry Potter

Hogwarts - The Castle

  • Alnwick Castle, Northumberland
    • Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone
      • Flying Lesson
      • Harry's introduction to Quidditch with Oliver Wood
      • Ron upsetting Hermione after Charms class
      • Harry, Ron and Hermione talking to Hagrid about Snape and Flamel
      • Hagrid with Christmas tree

      • The Cloisters were used in various scenes in both Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone and Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets.   

      • Lacock is also being used for several scenes in Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince.

  • Gloucester Cathedral, Gloucestershire
    • The Cloisters of Gloucester Cathedral became the corridors of Hogwarts in both Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone and Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets.  In the first movie Harry and Ron find the troll in these Cloisters and in the second film, the Cloisters became the flooded corridor outside Moaning Myrtle's bathroom and the location of the writing on the wall.
    • Gloucester Cathedral is also being used for several scenes in Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince
  • Durham Cathedral, Durham
    • The Chapter House and Cloisters of Durham Cathedral were used in scenes in both Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone and Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets.  The Chapter House was used as Professor McGonagall's classroom in both films for, among other scenes, the Transfiguration lessons.
  • Harrow Old School, Harrow, Middlesex
    • The fourth form room was used as Professor Flitwick's Charms classroom in Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone 
  • Christchurch College, Oxford University, Oxfordshire
    • The Great Hall at Hogwarts was modeled on the Great Hall at Christchurch College.  Hogwarts' Great Hall is actually a closed set at Leavesden Studios in Hertfordshire.
    • Christchurch College's grand 16th century stone staircase, which leads to its Great Hall, was used in several scenes in both Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone and Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets.
      • The first years' arrival and greeting by Professor McGonagall in Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone.
      • Harry and Ron encountering Filch on the staircase when they arrive at Hogwarts in Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets.
      • When Harry enters Tom Riddle's diary in Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets, he first encounters Tom Riddle and the younger Dumbledore on this staircase.
  •  Bodeleian Library, Oxford University, Oxfordshire
    • The Divinity School
      • The Divinity School was used as the Hogwarts hospital wing in Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone, Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets and Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban.
      • It was also used in Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire in the scene where Professor McGonagall is teaching the Gryffindor students to dance in preparation for the Yule Ball.
    • Duke Humfrey's Library
      • In Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone, Harry sneaks into the restricted section under his invisibility cloak.  Later in the movie, Hermione reads about the Sorcerer's Stone to Harry and Ron.
  • New College, Oxford University, Oxfordshire
    • In Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire, the Hogwarts quad where Harry warns Cedric about the dragons and Malfoy is turned into a ferret is actually the cloister quadrangle at New College, Oxford.

 

 Hogwarts - The Grounds 

  • Blenheim Palace, Oxfordshire
    • In Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix, Harry uses occlumency on Severus Snape and sees a flashback of Snape's past as a Hogwarts student.  This flashback scene was filmed on the grounds of Blenheim Palace, birthplace of Sir Winston Churchill.
  • Virginia Water, Surrey
    • In Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban, Harry first encounters Buckbeak at the beautiful lake in Virginia Water, Surrey.  The lake later takes on a more sinister tone, when Harry tries to protect Sirius from the dementors.
    • In Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire, Hermione tries to tell Harry that Hagrid is looking for him at the lake in Virginia Water.  It is also the location for the lakeside scene, following the second task, with Barty Crouch Sr.
  • Loch Shiel, Scotland
    • Most of the Hogwarts lake scenes in Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban, however, are shot at Loch Shiel in Scotland.
  • Black Park, Buckinghamshire
    • This is the location of Hagrid's hut in both Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone and Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets.
    • Black Park is also where Hagrid shows Harry the dragons in Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire.
  • Clachaig Gully, Glencoe, Scotland
    • In Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban, Glencoe was used as the dramatic backdrop for the scenes involving Hagrid's hut, Hermione punching Malfoy and the bridge where Harry speaks with Professor Lupin.
    • Glencoe has also been used for filming Harry Potter and the Half Blood Prince.
  • Steall Falls, Glen Nevis, Scotland
    • The location of the first task in Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire.
  • Black Rock Gorge, Evanton, Scotland 
    • The gorge that Harry is chased into by the Hungarian Horntail in Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire.
 The Hogwarts Express

  • London Kings Cross Station, London
    • Platform 9 3/4 was filmed between platforms 4 and 5 at Kings Cross mainline station. 
    • There is a photo opportunity on the way to platforms 9 and 10.  The station has opted to creatively install a luggage trolley as though it is halfway through the wall.

    • Kings Cross is also the location of the bridge where Hagrid gives Harry his Hogwart's Express ticket in Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone.
    • In Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix, Sirius joins Harry at Kings Cross before Harry sets off to Hogwarts.
  • London St. Pancras Station, London
    • The exterior of London St. Pancras stood in for Kings Cross when Harry and Ron left the station in the flying car after missing the Hogwarts Express in Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets.
  • Glenfinnan Viaduct, Glenfinnan, Scotland
    • This viaduct on the West Coast Railway route between Fort William and Mallaig, Scotland, was used for the Hogwarts Express journey in both Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets and Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban.  In Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets, Harry and Ron fly the flying car above and through the viaduct.
    • Between May and October, visitors can ride a Jacobite steam train on the 84 mile round trip journey between Fort William and Mallaig, crossing over the viaduct and stopping en route in Glenfinnan.
  • Goathland Station, North Yorkshire
    • This station, on the North York Moors Railway, became Hogsmeade Station in Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone.
  • Black Park, Buckinghamshire
    • In Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix, Black Park became the terminus for the Hogwarts Express at Hogsmeade.

 London and Privet Drive

Privet Drive

  • 12 Picket Post Close, Martin's Heron, Berkshire
    • The exterior of this house was used as the exterior of 4 Privet Drive, home of the Dursleys.
  • In Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban, Harry is picked up by the Knight Bus on Dowding Way in a housing estate opposite Leavesden Studios, Hertfordshire, where all of the Harry Potter movies are filmed.

Knight Bus Journey

  • Lambeth Bridge, London
    • This is where the knight bus squeezes between two London double-decker buses on the bridge on the way to The Leaky Cauldron in Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban.

The Leaky Cauldron

  • Leadenhall Market, London
    • In Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone, Harry and Hagrid walk to The Leaky Cauldron through Leadenhall Market, London.  The location for The Leaky Cauldron was just below the Lloyd's building and was disused at the time.  It is now The Glass House, located at 42 Bull's Head Passage in Leadenhall Market.
  • Stoney Street, Borough Market, London
    • In Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban, the Knight Bus drops Harry at the Leaky Cauldron, which was now filmed at a spot below a railway bridge and across from Borough Market in Stoney Street, London.

Gringotts Bank

  • Australia House, The Strand, London
    • The interior of Australia House was used as the wizarding bank, Gringotts, in Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone.  It is not open to the public.

London Zoo

  • London Zoo, Regent's Park, London
    • Harry talks to and frees a python in the Reptile House here at London Zoo in Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone.

The Ministry of Magic

  • Westminster Tube Station, London
    • In Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban, Harry and Arthur Weasley make their way to the Ministry of Magic via Westminster Tube Station on London Underground.
  • Scotland Place, Great Scotland Yard, London
    • This is where film crew placed the red telephone box prop that served as the visitor entrance to the Ministry of Magic in Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix.
 The Quidditch World Cup

  • Ashridge Woods, Hertfordshire
    • Harry, Hermione and the Weasleys are seen walking through the forest at Ashridge Estate, Hertfordshire on their way to the Quidditch World Cup in Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire.  Here they encounter Amos and Cedric Diggory.
  • Beacon Hill, Ivinghoe, Buckinghamshire
    • Harry, Hermione, the Weasleys and the Diggorys discover the portkey to the Quidditch World Cup at the top of this hill in Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire.
  • Seven Sisters, East Sussex
    • The view towards the sea at the Quidditch World Cup, in Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire, is of the white cliffs of the Seven Sisters.
